Dia Nacional del Alpaca – a celebration for the fluffy four-legged friends

In recognition of the economic and cultural importance of alpacas in South America, Peru has celebrated the "Day of the Alpaca" every August 1 as Dia Nacional del Alpaca since 2012.

This holiday was brought to life by an initiative of the Peruvian Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation.

In addition to the gentle and intelligent animals, the aim is to raise public awareness of the work of many local alpaca breeders and the respectful treatment of the wool and our nature. This day is also a reminder of how important it is to protect natural habitats in order to preserve alpaca culture for future generations.

Over 80% of the world's alpaca population live in Peru. In 2018, alpacas were declared a genetic resource of Peru by the Law for the Promotion of Genetic Improvement and Conservation of Native South American Camelid Breeds.

Celebrations and activities take place in all regions of the country on the National Day of the Alpaca. The biggest celebrations can be expected in the south of the country, in the cities of Puno, Cusco and Macusani - also known as "Peru's alpaca capital". The small town of Macusani is located in the Puno region and is said to have the largest concentration of alpacas in the world.

Numerous entertaining traditional games and competitions take place on this day, including a handicraft competition, a food competition, an alpaca wool spinning competition and, of course, the alpaca parade.

Many farms and animal parks offer special events on Alpaca Day. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the animals up close, feed them and learn more about how they are kept and cared for. Workshops on alpaca wool and handicrafts are also popular, as are guided tours that offer an insight into life on an alpaca farm.

Alpaca Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate these remarkable animals and learn more about their importance and benefits. Whether by visiting a farm, wearing alpaca wool or simply sharing a cute alpaca picture, there are many ways to honor this day and show our love for alpacas.

Celebrate Alpaca Day with us and let yourself be enchanted by the fascination of these wonderful animals!
